Ms Anita Ma

Chairperson, Playright

Today’s “Play for Child Health Seminar” is a celebration of many like-minded individuals and institutions coming together to promote the integration of hospital play services into children’s holistic care pathway in Hong Kong. Playright is a non-profit organization established in 1987 to carry out its mission of promoting children’s right to play, including children requiring hospitalization due to illness and injury. We believe in the common language of play to create a safe haven for children to express emotions resulting from life altering events, including but not limited to sudden admission to hospital, and/or long-term or frequent hospitalization. Play interventions by hospital play specialists also teach children to develop self-coping skills that empower them to face their treatment with confidence, strength and resilience.

Integration of hospital play services in Hong Kong is an ambitious project that has been in the making over the last three decades. From our humble beginnings in 1994 at Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth hospitals, we now provide direct play services at six public hospitals – Caritas Medical Centre, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Tseung Kwan O Hospital. Given that hospital play services are yet to be regularized in every hospital with a Paediatric department in Hong Kong, we believe there is room for development. The focus of this Seminar centres around the essential role of play as an integral part of the paediatric patient’s journey. Research and evidence-based practices of hospital play services in Hong Kong and internationally will be showcased, and serves to inspire and inform ongoing collaborations and new partnerships. The sustainable development of hospital play services is our ambition and we invite you to also dream big.

We are honoured to have your presence at this seminar, and hope you will join us in advocating for hospital play services in Hong Kong. A special thank you to the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for their generous funding, the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital for being our seminar collaborating partner, and all our stakeholders for supporting this meaningful cause for Hong Kong children. Once again, thank you for your trust and walking with us on this journey over the years.

Dr LEE Tsz-Leung

Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

Hospitalization can be a very stressful experience for everyone, especially children. In addition, most of the hospital admissions may possibly happen without warning and preparation. Lack of understanding about the upcoming procedures, unfamiliarity with the hospital environment and failure to understand the reasons for hospitalization can add to children’s & caregivers’ anxiety, fright, anger, uncertainty, and feelings of helplessness. This would result in uncooperative behaviors and/or increased stress symptoms, affecting physical recovery.

Hospital Play Intervention is a commonly used therapeutic activity to provide holistic and quality care to ease the psychological burden of hospitalized children. By observing children’s play and recreation, healthcare professionals and caregivers can learn about the child’s feelings, fears and concerns– information that is essential in helping children to deal with their healthcare experience and giving support to them.

Play and Leisure Activities, including arts, music & recreation, are a natural part of childhood, and vital to the normal development. Children are able to learn, master experiences, express themselves, cope with anxiety and develop skills through taking part of these activities. These experiences are important for co-creating the holistic care to children as well as supporting them to have a healthy and happy life.

The Hong Kong Children’s Hospital is delighted to be the collaborating partner of the “PLAY for Child Health” Seminar, which is an integral part of the Jockey Club Playright PLAY for Child Health Project, aiming to achieve excellence in holistic care for children.

BBS, JP – Honorary Advisor, Playright

First of all I would like thank our overseas experts from the Association of Child Life Professionals for gracing us with their presence coming all the way from US despite all the risks and barriers. Your support and training provided are most valuable to us.

I would also like to thank our overseas colleagues from Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Evelina London Children’s Hospital for joining the seminar via zoom. Your contributions are most inspirational to us.

Finally, I must thank all the local participants, Ms Anita Ma our Chairperson and Dr Bill Chan Chairman of the Organization Committee of the Seminar, and Playright colleagues for making the Seminar a success.

I was asked to give a 5 minute concluding remark. I must apologize first because probably I will not be keeping to time. Secondly I am not going to make it a concluding remark but a call for making play in health care settings (be it in hospitals, clinics or therapeutic or investigatory rooms) a norm and this should also be extended to their homes and educational environments in Hong Kong. The play service should also be of professional quality and be sustainable in terms of continuity of service and also of continuous quality improvement.

While Playright has been providing Play Services for decades and working towards making it an accredited service, we have yet to achieve this goal. We do need to learn from our international professional organizations, gain their support and collaborate with them to establish an effective and sustainable Health Care Play training programme and services for children of Hong Kong. As the culture, the tradition, the values as well as the health care environment can be very different, while we can use curriculum or training programmes developed in other countries we must also adapt and translate to meet the needs of our children.

On this note, I am very glad that many academic institutions have joined the task. I do hope Child Life Specialists can help us, in stages to develop and build a local Health Care Play Training programme with well-defined training, accreditation and continuing professional development and peer review quality service review.

My second call, our children, especially children with special needs have suffered tremendously during the 3 years Covid 19 sage. While we have good data that our children had increased obesity, increased myopia, more psychological problems and increased social media use from lack of physical activities and play. The many other impacts from lack of play are still not well researched and still evolving. Many experts have said that we have lost a generation as Chinese saying 三歲定八十.

Now we are going back to normal, in fact we do need to help our children to recover, regrow and regain this lost via innovative, transformational and re-imagining interventions. The inertia and habits so developed will takes years to recover. We should also harness the useful innovations developed during the pandemic and incorporate the effective ones into future services.

For these, there is even more dire need to develop and establish a robust forward looking services in line with structured training programmes to meet the future challenges. Close collaborations among all partners including the local and international ones, are vital to fill the gaps our covid generation kids had lost and rebuild a brighter future for them.
